Las Vegas, een van mijn favoriete steden. Decadent, verspilling, gokken, eten, shoppen, heet, droog, indrukwekkend etc, het is allemaal van toepassing op LV. Niet dat ik een gokker ben, maar er is zoveel te doen en te zien dat hier 24 uur in een dag gewoon te kort is. Overdag shoppen, lunchen en de zonsondergang zien in de Valley of Fire. De hele dag rondhobbelen in Red Rock State Park en 's avonds de casino's onveilig maken. De hitte ontvluchten en met een sweater aan Mount Charleston op en terugkomen in Las Vegas met de airco op max. Het is maar net wat je er zelf van maakt; als je een hekel aan verspilling hebt, ga er dan niet heen.
Neem het zoals het is; alles is maximaal gericht op entertainment. Een groot deel van de links verwijst naar commerciële site die nogal riant omgaan met pop-ups. Dus schakel de pop-up killer uit en kijk wat er loos is in LV!!
Las Vegas verandert in een steeds sneller tempo. Draaide eerst alles enkel en alleen om het gokken, de wensen van het publiek veranderde in een snel tempo. Het publiek moest meer gelokt worden en zo lang mogelijk in LV blijven. Na de 'gewone' casinos kwamen de thema's casinos zoals Ceasar's Palace, Mirage en Treasure Island. Maar het publiek moest nog langer vastgehouden worden en als het even kon de hotels niet verlaten; rap werden de resorts gebouwd. Oude casinos en hotels werden afgebroken in Las Vegas stijl met explosies en vuurwerk. De lage rente in de USA had tot gevolg dat er een ware boom is ontstaan op bouwgebied; alleen zijn het op dit moment niet enkel casinos, maar meer appartments en hotels zonder casinos. Omdat de grondprijs zoals te verwachten erg hoog is, worden de appartments steeds hoger en hoger en de huurprijs/koopprijs eveneens. Doordat er een ware groei-explosie aan de gang is bracht dat een problemen mee die de komende jaren een zware last voor Las Vegas zullen zijn. Voor iedere hotelkamer of appartement is anderhalf mens nodig om werkzaamheden te ondersteunen. Dit leidt er direct toe dat er een grote toestroom is van mensen die in Las Vegas kunnen werken maar daar ook willen wonen. Lag het beroemde Las Vages sign buiten de stad en vormde de 215 de buitengrens, nu niet meer.
Het grootste probleem waar Las Vegas op dit moment mee te kampen heeft is water. Het waterverbruik is groter dan de aanvoer. Vorig jaar (2007) stond Lake Mead zo'n 8 meter onder het niveau van drie jaar daarvoor en er lijkt geen einde aan te komen. Er zal water geïmporteerd moeten worden uit de noordelijke staten en er zal water gehaald moeten worden uit de waterbank in Arizona.
